En sus inicios, el jazz se escribía jass. La primera banda en grabar un disco se llamaba “Original Dixieland Jass Band”. Su líder, el cornetista Nick LaRocca, explica por qué se cambió a jazz:

“los niños y algunos adultos no podían resistir la tentación de raspar la letra ‘J’ de los posters”, de manera de generar “ass” (culo).
