El símbolo de los cuernos del Heavy Metal fue popularizado por Ronnie James Dio, vocalista de Black Sabbath, quien a su vez lo aprendió del gesto de su abuela italiana. En Italia, es una superstición se le conoce como “Malocchio” (“mal de ojo”), destinada a espantar a los malos espíritus.
