Siddharta Gautama, luego Buda, fue venerado como santo cristiano, bajo el nombre de Josafat.
Se incorporó al calendario ortodoxo griego al día 26 de agosto, y como mártir de la Iglesia Católica Romana al día 27 de noviembre. El origen está en el relato de Barlaam y Josafat, popular durante la Edad Media.
